Kindergarten Cop (1990)

When I was growing up, I watched a lot of movies that, especially looking back now, I would deem inappropriate for my age. And yet I watched them a lot. This was one such movie. My mom and I wore the VHS we had of this movie out when I was little, watching it over and over and over to the point that I had it mostly memorized by the time I was seven. There were parts we endlessly quoted at each other.

One time I even got an impression perfect. The little nasally-voiced kid that goes "mister kimball mister kimball *snort* are you all right?" as he's being wheeled out of the school on the stretcher toward the end. Got that perfect as my mom was pulling the car through a drive through and we had to park and laugh about it for a solid few minutes.

I was so intensely excited when I found a copy of this on DVD when I was down in the Twin Cities recently that I had to snap it up regardless of price. Thankfully, it was like $6. I've watched it twice since finding it again and I can definitely say it holds up to my memory of it. Even if I don't think any part of the beginning half of that movie is even remotely appropriate for a small child to be watching.

Easily still one of my top ten favorite movies. One day I'll put out a list that actually quantifies my top ten favorite movies. I'd say this is probably number two. Five stars, fully recommend.

Babe (1995)

When I was young, I would often find myself going to the movies with my mother in her spare time. Or watching movies with her in the living room in her spare time. She was big on books and movies and certain television shows, and she tried hard to bestow that love of media upon me, but it didn't quite take. I based my entire moviegoing personality on the movies she'd decided to watch and had decided to drag me along for the ride. For several years, that kinda made me not want to watch movies at all anymore.

I'm working to change that now, starting with Babe, which I saw in theaters with my mom when I was six, in the summer before I started not liking school all that much. Long after we got a DVD player, Mom found a copy of Babe in the Walmart bargain bin on one of our shopping trips, and we watched it together a handful of times.

Before watching it today, I don't think I'd seen it since my mom was alive, and she's been gone nearly 12 years now. It was likely closer to twenty or so years ago that I last saw the movie.

It was fun to rewatch, I got a nice jolt of nostalgia from certain scenes and from the dumb little mice. It was nice to be reminded of some of the goofier/more kid-friendly in-jokes me and my mom had with each other.

I figured I'd start with something cute and lighthearted, I'm not doing this alphabetically or in any real order at all.
